January 11 "Wrestle With God" Genesis 32-34

Dear Beloved, These verses speak to me deep inside somewhere.  Jacob deceived his brother gravely.  Jacob ran.  Jacob hears his brother and 400 men are on their way to meet him.  Jacob wrestles with God:  "I will not let you go unless you bless me." Gen 32:26.  It's a story of a broken father whose sins followed him into the next chapter.  Yet, God sends an angel to him, to me, to you.  It's not because we are so good; it's because we are His.  Jacob meets his twin Esau and the pages turn well for Jacob.  Friends again.  Yet, Jacob's next move is to ignore the defilement of his daughter, Dinah.  Every one of us is a broken vessel dealing with our own stuff.  I thought I would be better than I am at 60.  I am more aware of sin in my own life than ever.  And that's a good place to be.  Dependent on God.  Driven by the dark spots on my heart to find God, find freedom.  I will not let go and my prayer is that you won't either, all your days.

  1. Jacob obeyed the Lord and returned to the land of his father. As he waited to meet Esau, he prayed, he wrestled, and he received a new name - Israel. He met Esau and they embraced. When I read this passage I always wonder did they build a new relationship, or was this it?

And then Dinah's brothers avenge her rape. Jacob's reaction is not what one expects. Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”

Her brothers stuck by their decision according to Scripture. We can only imagine Dinah's life after this.
