November 19 "A Greater Calling" Acts 16:14

The author of this book gives much credit to the work of Lydia.  They noticed.  A woman with a good trade.  Yet, a worshiper of God.  And the one who penned the story says it this way:  "A worshiper of God was listening; and the LORD opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul."  She was already longing worshiping.  God still opened her heart to respond.  And Lydia prevailed.  Acts 16:14-15.

No matter what happened in Lydia's busy life, she responded to the Word of God. She made time to read it. Her calling in life was defined, a seller of purple.  But there was a greater calling than working diligently, working hard, working long hours.  May the same be said of each one of us. We are called to listen to the One we love not to work harder but to listen long.

Just like the Bereans.  "They received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."  Acts 17:11.  And they believed.

Do I come with great eagerness and examination?  What could I possibly long for more than this Word of Grace.

If nothing matters more than the Word of God, am I listening?  Perhaps, nothing matters more than listening to this Word of Grace; listening to what am I saying every day; listening to what others are saying.  Linger.  Listen.  Long.  God is speaking to us.

PRAYER FROM PSALM
Psalm 45:1 says that their tongues were the pens of ready writers.  They had come to listen.  God, You changed them.  Change me.  Make me to write from this heart of mine what will last.  Only You can change me, change others.  Help us all to listen long.

  1. I've been aware recently that I do not wait on The Lord spending time listening and being still. Prayers becom laundry lists and my demands for favor and band aid fixes. He has so much more if I am willing to step out and wait for the better. Prayer time should be more of a conversation, a consultation to see where I must yield and He must increase. I'm ready to move to this prayer. May my motive only be to seek Him more, to know him better.
