The mighty have fallen.
2 Samuel 1:17.
The anointed of God.
We will not take matters into our own hands.
That is how David describes the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. Saul who hated him more than life itself.
Jonathan who loved David more than life itself.
David pours over the details of the slayings and says he will not stand for the man who took the life of the anointed King Saul. A coup de grace! David was more committed to God and His plan than anything on this earth.
David was willing to take good news and bad news as it came. Never rushed God's will. He waited a very long time to wear this crown as King of Israel. He truly believed that we can lose in this world, however, no thief breaks in to kill and destroy that must first go through the Hand of God. The Providence of God is signed all over David's rule.
David finally receives the crown that was rightfully his from the beginning. His first act is to deliver a eulogy. David lays down his sword and picks up a friendly sword, his pen. His tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
What is true here? We will not dishonor the name of our God.
What's the point? We will not rejoice in the downfall of others. May we find that kind of commitment to our enemies, our friends. May our holy commitment be to the God we love, whatever coup de grace befalls our plans.
PRAYER FROM PSALMS
Psalm 143:9 ~ Deliver me from my enemies, O God.
I flee unto Thee to hide me.
OVERVIEW: 2 Samuel 1-3

Can you imagine how David felt for that time when he knew he woud be king, and was hanging out with all the misfits in a cave! I am afraid I would question God's plan, but the info we have about David tells us he waited, he respected God's anointed, he grieved their loss, even the one who had made his life so miserable. He only sought to please God and found favor among the men of Judah.
ReplyDeleteLet us strive for that understanding that God is sovereign when enemies pursue, and when life seems to go well for us. He reigns through all of it. And we can rest in that knowledge.
David continued to trust in God, His plan, and His timing. I think I would have said enough of this and rushed through it at my own speed. Waiting on the Lord and His timing results in growing our patience, trust, and faith.
