July 23 "The Ebb and Flow of My Life" Ecclesiastes 1-4

Dear Kids,

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens.
This broken world we live in, full of hate for the blue line today, is repassing through the racial discrimination in which I grew up.  The days of Ruby and Rosa.  And our lives ebb and flow.  Solomon writes this book in his older days, unlike the young writings of Proverbs.  Matthew Henry writes in his commentary that "every change concerning us, with the time and season of it, is unalterably fixed and determined by a Supreme Power, and we must take things as they come, for it is not in our power to change what is appointed for us...We live in a world of changes.  When we are in prosperity we must live easy, yet not secure because the lowest valley may join that highest mountain.  Be easy.  Be advised.  Enjoy the good of your labor---Barrett does.  Bob does.  Lauren does.  In humble dependence upon God and His Providence.  Neither lifted up with opes, nor cast down with fears, but with evenness of mind expecting every event."  Because they will come.
