May 9 "What Can I Do For You?" Samuel 8-9, I Chronicles 18

A young David reigns in justice and equity.  I Chronicles 18:14.
A young David defeats foe upon foe upon foe.
A young David smotes Moab and measures them with a line---a rare practice for Christians done in light of the atrocious massacre of David's parents and family.
A young David serves the House of Saul.

David stepped up from his obscurity to glory.  And he did it with such conviction and kindness.  Thinking about Jonathan---"what can I do for the House of Saul?"  Anyone left there?  David never took out on Jonathan what Jon's dad did to him.  Amazing love!  He got this right.

So he calls out Mephibosheth just like God calls out our name.  Calls the lame.  Calls the weak.  Calls the poor.  What a beautiful picture of the Grace of God to us all.  Mephibosheth didn't have to do anything.  He was just eating and surviving and thinking and talking---when the note came.  Come to the King's table.  He came in humility.  May we do the same.

COME BOLDLY:  Timeless Prayers
We humbly come before you this day, Our Father, to say thank you for calling us your own.  Thank you that when we were lame and weak and poor, you touched our hearts.  We may still be lamed but we are deeply loved and everything is right side up now.  Father, help us to see the needy in front of us this day that we may offer the grace and kindness of David.

PHOTO: The Hill Country. Doing our daily chores.  Milking cows, teaching students, running errands, bowing to pray, taking phone calls, cooking dinner, reading our Bible, driving home ... and the word comes.  You are called and loved far more than you know this moment.

  1. And David said, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always."

I cry when I read this story--a place at the king's table!

Blessed Mephibosheth--restored, redeemed, beloved of the king.

I, too, am a crippled blessed child of the King, who will one day sit at the table with the King of Kings.

  2. Annette, I think I misspoke. Do you know the names of these cows? I think they're from your ranch not from the Hill Country ranch.

  3. They look like our Angus but lots of folks have black cows! LOL They are cute, though, aren't they!

  4. Well, your comment just made me cry. Not the sweet one about the cows. But about sitting at the table with the King of Kings. You know, I miss out on party invitations here in my older years, but I can always be ushered to a place where an invitation is extended to come 24/7.

  5. I keep flip flopping if it's your ranch or the one in the Hill Country that we have gone to. Hmmm. Tonight, I think they are your cows ;)
