March 10 "We Are All on Our Way Home" Numbers 35-36

The sun sets on the Book of Numbers.  So, here it is.  The end of the Book of Numbers.  Numbers 36:13 - "These are the commandments and the rules that the Lord commanded through Moses to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho." The conclusion.  Judgments which the LORD commanded in the plains of Moab in regards to settling in Canaan. They were so close to their new home---but not for Moses---he was closer to his real home.  And yet, no word of upheaval for him.  No word of dissent.  Just a powerful Moses delivery--- from the one who will never set foot in the Promised Land.  What was Moses thinking?  He knew he was going home, too.  When you are "let go" of a job, you usually don't stay around.  He didn't have to.

He faced, with every word, the consequences of his actions.
He embraced, with every word, his God not his circumstances.
He laced, with every word, his relationship to a God carrying him home.
Not a perfect man with perfect ways.
Just a Beautiful God Who stirred something in Moses that I know not.
Dependence in such disappointment.

COME BOLDLY:  Timeless Prayers
Father, the prayer of our hearts:  Bring us home.  Enable us this day to take one step closer. Matthew Henry wrote in his commentary on this passage: "Whatever new condition God is, by His Providence, bringing us into, we must beg of Him to teach us the duty of it, and to enable us to do it, that we may do the work of the day in its day, of the place in its place."  It's the OT.  Our delight is now our duty. And how beautiful is that.  Infuse us with Your Power as we close this book.

PHOTO:  Last night's sun sets and takes away my breath as I turned around and saw what was happening behind me.  And as the sun sets every night, we are all one day closer to our real home.  What rumbles inside of me is not from a good place---it's an urgency to define life not as it really should be but yet screams it is.  Find rest, o my soul, in knowing a God Who cares and carries me.

  2. It seems as if we are speeding through the OT this year. I pray this year I keep my eyes on Jesus and never look back at Egypt.

  3. We all are one day closer to going Home. I love what Matthew Henry writes above, Bev. Teaching us the duty of what our new day brings, enabling us to do the work of the day in its day, of the place in its place. Such wisdom from a life well lived.

I so want to finish well, as Moses did. I say this but don't often think of what all that entails. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote:

Watch your life and doctrine closely, for if you persist in doing this, you will save both yourself and your hearers (1 Tim. 4:16)."

If I had a life verse, this would be it. It's in the details that the bigger goal is accomplished.

John Dunlop, in his book "Finishing Well to the Glory of God" summarizes what finishing well looks like:

    1. Live Well
    2. Let Go Graciously
    3. Treasure God's Love; Love Him in Return
    4. Grow Through Adversity
    5. Embrace a Biblical View of Life and Death
    6. Complete Your Agenda
    7. Make Appropriate Use of Technology
    8. Changing Gears from Cure to Comfort Care
    9. Rest in Jesus

Closing another book in our journey today, I am grateful for each of you, fellow pilgrims in our journey Home. Let us spur each other on to finish well to the great Glory of our Living God.

    1. Oh Annette, and it's a Beautiful God in you that "infuses" you with power to do that kind of watching that sets you free. And you are, dear one! You are in so many ways.

    2. #7 is talking about medical technology, by the way. He speaks of getting heart bypass surgery or knowing when not to pursue chemo, etc. and other quality of life issues.

  4. I have struggled this week with getting x-rays and a bone scan because of a new pain in my hip. I don't want the radiation yet I can't go against the doctor's orders. They are waiting on me to make a decision. I don't know. May God make it clear. And here you point out #7 to me!

  5. Oh gosh, Bev. I didn't mean that to be for you at all. I was not sure what he was talking about when I read it, so I went back and took a further look. I've just been looking for a book for Connie to read. I also found one on pain and suffering by Tim Keller for her. So, my focus has been a little introspect thinking about life and death and all the in-between.

I am so sorry you are going through another scare. I will pray for wisdom and comfort and healing for you right now. Love and hugs.
