Meanwhile...back in Genesis...a guy named Abraham. Did he know about Job in the far east? He would have loved Job as a friend. God makes a Divine Promise to this guy, Abram, who just falsified the documents and made his wife his sister. Let's put this in perspectve, God is no longer talking about the whole world but about just one man and his family. A world God wants to bless through one man. Not Job. Abram. I wonder what Abraham thinks when God says in Genesis 15:1 "Fear not, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." And the "say-you-are-my-sister" guy responds in the very next verse with a weighted question: What about the children you promised me? This is the backdrop for the divine promise in Genesis 15:1: Somewhere. Somehow. Between verse 1 and verse 5, this "say-you-are-my-sister" guy believes God even though his wife is barren and old--- on top of it. Oh! May we look with eyes of faith like Abram not eyes of sight like Lot who chose the most fruitful land for himself. Did Lot even ask God? God believes in this broken "say-you-are-my-sister" patriarch. And Abram trusts his God in the midst of no sight and a huge mistake. Abram is about to find out that God is His Reward.
COME BOLDLY: Timeless Prayers
Look up, Abram. Look up, Ang. Look up Annette. Look up Mary Lou. God's Promises are for you. God, would you work a faith with power that we can trust You with what we do not see.
PHOTO: View from a mountaintop on a ranch in Lampasas, Texas. My son and I watched the sunset together. The son I waited for seven years, on a promise from God. Born against all odds. May we trust the Promises of God to each of us for we are all "self-swindlers" like "say-you-are-my-sister" Abram.

ReplyDeleteHe Believed... He Believed... Lord, help me/us to keep Believing You have everything under control and that everything makes perfect sense to You. Please give us Peace in the waiting. In Jesus' name.
How do you suppose God chose Abraham? He came from a land that worshipped other gods. He wasn't that good at following directions. (God said leave your kin behind. Yet, he took Lot with him.) He was afraid for his life and lied about his wife. But God knew Abraham would have the faith to build His lineage. As is often the case in Scripture, God chooses an unlikely cast of characters. A motley crew He has to work with, and it makes miraculous change even more miraculous. To this day, He uses some unlikely characters to accomplish His Will. And that lends way to help me believe that He can use me, even in the state that I am.
ReplyDeleteGive us faith, Lord, to know we too, are useful in Your Kingdom. May Your Will be done, and use me, I pray. Use me. Make this life count for eternity some small way. Maybe I'm not too old to be useful to You. Make Your Love known through me. Light the next step toward You. And bless that path with Your promised blessing. Amen.
I thank You Lord God Almighty, that like Abram we are chosen by You.
