Matthew 20:32 "What Do You Want Me to Do For You?" (January 31)

Didn't we just have this conversation in Capernaum---Who is the greatest?  Did the two disciple sons go home and tell their Zebedee mom who became involved in this Jericho conversation?  And are these verses written for every person in leadership?  For pastors and speakers?  Matthew 20: 26-28  "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."  The other 10 disciples were idignant over the Zebedee display. And along comes two blind men crying out loud for mercy...and Jesus asks in 20:32 - "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus knew, didn't He?  He could see their blindness. He knew their thoughts. In pity, Jesus touched their eyes. What parts of me are crying out this day for greatness, for His Touch. In pity, may He touch you deeply so that you may see with the eyes of your heart.

  1. Thought about you FBC Houston girls a lot yesterday. Spent the day with my lifelong friend Cyndi Adams Jacobson. Her parents took me in as a brand new Christian in Houston when I walked up to the door of FBC looking for God. Actually, if you remember the story, I was looking for Billy Graham and found Brother John instead.

I woke up today at 2:45 pm---that's why I'm still up at midnight. I've been fighting bronchitis.

Just wanted to say it is such a joy to know each of you and walk with you through the NT. I am deeply touched by your comments.

Did I miss anyone yesterday on the roll call? We'd love to walk with you.

I'm working all week at the private school so I won't be back here til tomorrow night. See you then. Hope this week is full of wisdom for each of you.

  2. There were a couple of key points which stood out to me in today's passage.

    1. I think sometimes I do not know what I am asking, whether it's on my behalf or someone else's.

    2. They followed Him. I need to ask myself am I following, walking along side or have I run past the Lord and jumped into the lead?

  3. Matthew 20:32-"Jesus stopped and called over, "What do you want from me?"

33They said, "Master, we want our eyes opened. We want to see!"

34Deeply moved, Jesus touched their eyes. They had their sight back that very instant, and joined the procession. "

We say, "We want to see." Do we really? Do we really want to see us as others see us?
Fortunately, Jesus sees us as we want to be, what we can be. Lovingly, patiently, He gradually opens our eyes, like removing a blindfold after an eye injury, giving us just the right amount of light that our eyes can handle at that moment in time.

  4. Just a couple of take aways for today:

    1. Serve. Serve. Rarely what we would choose to do (almost always takes me out of my very small comfort zone), but it is our high calling.

    2. Blinded? He knows. However, he wants us to ask.

    3. Following is not running along aimlessly expecting Jesus to keep up. We have a Guide that shows us the way and goes before us.

I found a new Sunday School class yesterday at FBC Houston after almost 5 years of not going. It filled a hole I didn't realize I had. Worship is good and fellowship is a gift.

We walk together here at Pearls so sweetly. Love this place and each of you.

  5. I am in a funk this morning. I'm not sure exactly why. The Lord asks, "What do you want me to do for you?" I'm not sure I know what to ask.

I hurt for my daughter this morning. I see how she is struggling with some things that she is going to have to discover on her own that the Lord can supply. I can only encourage her in this but it hurts to watch and I'm longing for her to know the Lord more deeply and see with the "eyes of her heart."

Lord, please open my eyes that I may see You. Oh may I be living the example that she might follow.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24

  6. Praying for your girl, Michele. Praying for all our young people on here that they "see" life from His Viewpoint. All of us! Love you!

  7. "What do you want?"

I have two daughters. This woman had two sons.

She came to the Master and kneeled before Him.

He asks her, "What do you want?"

He has just declared that he is going to be crucified. Then raised in 3 days. Wonder if she knew what that even meant?

Her desire out of all her needs, was for her sons to be close the Jesus in His Kingdom.

I'm afraid that's really my desire, too. That He would rule and reign in their lives.

I don't care about them sitting on each side of Him, but I want Jesus to be their Master.

We have many other things in the way right now...but nothing is more important to this mom than that my daughters would be under His Arms...one on His right side and one on His left.

And believe me, I KNOW this is His desire, too.

Bowing low, kneeling, asking for a miracle...Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me and my daughters!

  9. Yes. Find Him and never let go. Lots of room for all of us under those loving arms of Jesus.

  10. Been thinking today about the Young Ruler (like our young adults) who went home sad, not mad or rebuked, just sad for what he thought he would lose. I'm with you Deborah---so wanting our children to be close to Him. Have you ever heard Charles Spurgeon's sermon on the mom who met her children on Judgment Day? Our pastor read it on Sunday and you could hear a pin drop among 2,000 young people when he came to the closing climax of the story. I'll post it sometime. Gotta run to bed---haven't felt well today. Just can't get over this bronchitis. Oh God, we kneel before you---what do we want? That the loves of our life find You and never let go. With all of you that adore your children so---Thinking & Praying for our young people as I kneel tonight.
