February 12 ... Numbers 3 - 4 "Something Wrong in My Own Heart"

Numbers 4:49 - "And that's the story of their numbering."  Every man did what God commanded him and carried out the work.  That was one huge assignment!  So did it work?  They obeyed and what came of that?  What does our obedience result in?  Peace?  Rest?  Joy?  66 Love Letters says: "They never looked deep enough inside to see what was terribly wrong in their own hearts."  This has been one of the hardest days cause I was thinking life and love should be easier!

  1. And I thought volunteering to be the treasurer for our 30 year high school reunion was a big deal? I graduated in a class of 300 students. Collect their checks and pay the restaurant. Hmm... convicted again!

  2. In today's reading we see how God divides the work among the Levites. He does the same thing today, we must be careful not to do it all ourselves.

As I read through the details of this census, I think ahead to Augustus' census and Mary and Joseph.

  3. "Protect them, Aaron and his sons are to precede them into the Sanctuary and assign each man his task and what he is to carry. But the Kohathites themselves must not go in to look at the holy things, not even a glance at them, or they will die."

You know how hard it is to not look at something as soon as someone tells you "don't look".

I love how God is a God of order. But then as I read the detail, how much order starts to set in.
And yet, every provision was for their protection.
Bev, your question is really worth thinking about. We can be obedient all day but not have our hearts right.
I'm so sorry you were struggling today. I pray He carries your heavy heart and burden today.

Okay, I'm off to go get Lindsay's briday portrait taken finally. We never got to it before the wedding, and it is a cold gray day in Houston. Have a good Friday everyone!

  4. As I read in Numbers, I was reminded again that God is a God of order. He does everything for a reason. Nothing is frivolous or unnecessary, although I do wonder why some of the details are noteworthy.

Bev, your comments always make me think. As I ponder your questions, I keep returning to your post from yesterday as I look at what the Israelites' obedience got them. God is good, but He's not safe. The Israelites weren't willing to do the deep heart work that God asked of them. And He continues to ask more of me than it feels like I can handle. My idol has been a life that's manageable and comfortable yet that's not what He's called me to. I'm still chewing on how to look deep enough inside and to have the courage to deal with whatever I find.

  5. God gives such detailed instructions which also indicate no one person has to do everything to accomplish the task at hand. Early on I began to realize I couldn't do everything but there are still areas where it seems right. Wrong. I am aware of the importance of being organized. That means organized by being Spirit led and not Sylvia led.

Right now God has me in a Season of Rest very slowly I am learning what really is important and what can wait or just forget about it.

PTL that God loves me so unconditionally and is willing to provide me instructions "Just As I Am." I pray to become more obedient to His Word.

  6. I too recognized God's order in these two chapters. I couldn't help but be in awe of the leadership and authority the Lord placed on Ithamar (Aaron's son, who was the authority appointed of the Gershonites and the Merarites).

Divine authority is so important to a believer's life and its in that secret place under the shadow of the Almighty, where there is liberty, provision, and protection. Staying under the authority the Lord places in my life, always bring me freedom and a lot more peace.
