Reading Proverbs is the Shame of Exposure or the Appeal of Wisdom. I'm being haunted or hunted. "With God's help, I shall become myself." Soren Kierkegaard.
Proverbs 16
1 Mortals make elaborate plans, butGod has the last word.
2 Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good;God probes for what is good.
7 When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand.
9 We plan the way we want to live, but onlyGod makes us able to live it
Proverbs 17
9 Overlook an offense and bond a friendship; fasten on to a slight and—good-bye, friend!
27 The one who knows much says little; an understanding person remains calm.
Proverbs 18
15 Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.
21 Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit—you choose.
22 Find a good spouse, you find a good life—and even more: the favor ofGod !
24 Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.
"Do you ponder all I have created and recognize a wisdom you lack? Do you observe life and see your God whose Sovereign Power shuts your mouth, whose uncompromising Love opens your ears to hear Me speak? If not, you have no fear of Me. You have not even the beginnings of wisdom?" 66 LL. Do I really fear God? Is my hand over my mouth?

ReplyDelete"God cares about honesty in the workplace;
ReplyDeleteyour business is his business." (Prov 16:11)
"Friends come and friends go,
but a true friend sticks by you like family." (Prov 18:24)
"Words kill, words give life;
they're either poison or fruit—you choose." (Prov 18:21)
These three verses speak exactly to where I am in my heart right now. I'm praying for God's will in my work situation. My relationships with friends could be a whole blog post. My mouth gets me in trouble WAY too often!
Deborah, I am in full agreement with your prayer for choosing our words wisely. I just thought about something my mom told me 35 years ago and I can still remember exactly where I was standing. I'll pray that we can forgive those who have hurt us with their words. Your words are always an encouragement to me!
Love,
Angie xoxo

ReplyDeleteThere's an old song called "Wonderful Words of Life" that I think of particularly as I read Proverbs. I'm singing this Sunday morning...

Some of you didn't grow up singing the old hymn classics, so I share the link.
I'm feeling the shame and the appeal, as these words of life fall on me fresh, unshielded by the familiarity of another version.
Write these words on our hearts. Transform us with their power. Cleanse us Your truth, Lord.
What did Twinkle say??
ReplyDeleteMy computer is acting weird these days. Have been having some trouble with it. We are in the process of looking for another laptop. This laptop is 10 years old and on its last leg. Facebook has been frozen for some time now. And it takes
f o r e v e r to open up a link. I'll get on top of it soon. Hope there's not too many more interruptions. Thanks for understanding. Bev
I cannot wait to get to church in an hour and worship my God. And to think that people all over the world are praising our One and Only. And we join the company of those saints. My niece & husband lost their daddy unexpectedly on Friday. The funeral is today. He's sitting on His lap. Down on here on earth I sit in a bit of confusion and feeling some fears BUT I wrestle and am finding a very good God in the midst. Struggling with you and waiting with you with an energy that only HE can provide. An energy that is so powerfully at work in us...the energy of Christ in Col 1:28. I love Him so. Can't wait for real church in one hour!

Bev, it's okay! I had chosen this verse and wrote a few things about words being like arrows aimed to kill or stones hurled to kill. I remembered words spoken by classmates that I can still recall. And words spoken by my former husband that come to my mind today and hurt.
But my parents never left those branded words that hurt. We just lived life and no words of regret to be reminded of daily. I'm so glad! My parents are not perfect, but both are wise Christians that I still seek godly counsel from when I need them.
And I do pray that all of us would speak words of encouragement to others today. I pray that our words would be to lift each other up when we fall into a ditch! And to give each other sound words of counsel that brings life and truth to our situations.
I love you ladies and wish you all a peaceful Sunday. I'm starting to love Proverbs. It is Life 101.
